LOPHIOstoma mangrovei Kohlm. & Vittal

Mycologia 78: 485, 1986.

Ascomata 220-325 mm high, 650-780 mm diameter, elongated, laterally compressed, broadly oblong with a flat top in frontal view, conical to truncate in sagittal section, apapillate, black, developing on a thin, black, stromatic crust, at first immersed, later erumpent by removal of the covering host tissue, carbonaceous, opening with an elongated cleft like ostiole at the flattened top, gregarious. Pseudoparaphyses branched, merging with the periphyses in the ostiolar canal.


Asci 162-195 x17.5-20
mm, 8-spored, thick-walled, fissitunicate, cylindrical, short pedunculate, without apical apparatus.


Ascospores 35-43 x 6.5-8.5
mm, fusiform, biseriate, initially 1-septate, but later becoming 3-septate, constricted at the central primary septum, hyaline, surrounded by an evanescent sheath.
